Safety & Club Rules
Club Rules
The EERC Club Rules describe the rules of the club (updated 2009) and the club bye-laws. They are detailed in a PDF attachment (see below).
Safety
Eton Excelsior Rowing Club promotes safe and responsible rowing.
The EERC safety plan (see attachment below) provides general safety information and river circulation plan and is ESSENTIAL reading for all those rowing at EERC. This Safety Plan supplements the Amateur Rowing Association Water Safety Code and the club bye-laws. It makes reference to the club circulation plan, rules for adverse conditions, the ARA Water Safety Code and ARA Incident Reporting - all are provided as PDF attachments below.
Further information on water safety can be found on the British Rowing ARA website.
Weil's Disease (Leptospirosis)
As rowers, be aware that this dangerous disease can be caught from contaminated river water and you are advised to familiarise yourself with the symptoms which start around 10 days following infection with the bacterium. Symptoms are headache, fever, chills, severe muscle aches and tenderness, redness of the eyes, loss of appetite, vomiting and sometimes a skin rash. During Winter months, flu-like symptoms are more likely and so might be wrongly ignored. Just keep an eye on such symptoms if they do not readily clear up. A former rower is known to have caught the disease in January this year following a kayak capsize in the Thames at Boulter's Lock near Maidenhead. Wash your hands after every water session and, if you take one in the boat, keep your drink bottle away from river water.
For further information see the NHS Direct web site which has an article on the disease.
Trailer Towing and Launch Driving
Please note that ONLY members authorised by the Captain/Safety Advisor may use one of the Club launches or tow the Club Trailers.
Lights on Boats
When it is dark, all boats must have a light on the stern and bow, please note the rules:
- 1.11.6 At all times in poor visibility, (e.g. after sunset and early morning) craft shall be fitted with white lights showing fore and aft and visible through 360 degrees, as required by the "Rules for Mariners" published by the Department of Transport. Where a local Navigation Authority specifies differently, then such requirements must be met. Where no local rule exists the Department of Transport regulations apply. Rowing or sculling in the dark or in poor visibility is dangerous and is not to be encouraged.
- 2.5.5.3 Launches involved in activities between the hours of sunset and sunrise are required to be fitted with lights as laid down in "Rules for Mariners" published by the Department of Transport or as prescribed by the appropriate navigation authority.
