Pubs & Clubs Regatta
Entries Closed
What is Pubs & Clubs?
The Pubs and Clubs Regatta is an event held by EERC which advertises the great sport of rowing, raises money for the club and is a great day out for both competitors and their friends and family who come along to support. Up to 24 crews take part in various heats throughout the day and race each other to see who gets to the final. Each crew is made up of either four men or four women racing together in a boat. There will be a best overall winner and a best overall loser in each category. You will get a minimum of two races on the day.
When is it held?
The Pubs & Clubs Regatta will be held on Saturday 3rd September 2011 and the club typically looks to hold the event every 2-3 years. (Alternated date is September 17th 2011 - should river conditions be unrowable)
Who can enter it?
All competitors will be either Novice (i.e. never rowed before) or will have rowed in last years P&C regatta, but have not taken the sport up or rowed since. Applicants must be 18 years or older. Any shape, height and level of fitness are acceptable (please see Pubs & Clubs Rules below). This is about having fun!
How much does it cost to enter?
The cost per crew is £120. For each member of the crew it will thus cost £30.
What training will my crew receive?
Once your entry has been accepted, the crew leader will receive notification of the cox who will be in charge of your crew. The cox will coach and steer you in your boat during the training sessions and will also race you on the day. There will also be launch qualified coaches on the river giving guidance too, so you will get double the benefit of our members' expertise!
You will receive training sessions. One of these will consist of an induction and safety briefing at the boat club. You will be allocated sessions on the water of which you MUST complete for safety reasons. If you do not complete the sessions, then the club may remove you from the race if the coaches feel your crew's safety and the safety of your cox is at risk.
What will happen on the day?
Before the BIG DAY, the draw will be announced and uploaded on the website. All crews will be asked to register at the club an hour or two before the races begin (time will be confirmed at a later date). Once registered, you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere with your family and friends until your crew is called to boat. Races will be approximately 15 minutes apart, so it is vital that the crew leader knows the whereabouts of his/her crew when its time to boat in order to avoid any delays. A quick turnaround is vital in order to keep with the race timetable.
Then, you do what you trained to do… race and have a blast!

Planning your training sessions
Your cox will contact you to arrange training times. Please work with him/her when arranging the times having discussed available dates with your crew beforehand. It will make the booking process far easier. Also, the earlier you book, the better choice of times you will have available to you. Training sessions will occur each day of the week. See 'training and coaching rota' for times.
What do I wear?
In order to train, all you'll need is shorts and a T-Shirt (or leggings and long sleeve shirt if it's a little colder). Bring a drink and a spare pair of socks. A spare set of clothes should be in the boot of your car, just in case!!! Oh, and don't forget to bring a load of good spirit. You'll have great fun on the water!
Fancy Dress Competition!
There is a prize for the “best dressed crew”so let your imagination run wild! However, remember that your costume should not restrict your movement whilst rowing and you should be able to swim in it (in case of capsize).
Helpful Guide to Crews Training
All our coxes and coaches will be following a training rota to ensure that you receive the best quality training possible. However, it might be helpful to know one or two things before you take your 1st outing.
There are 4 people in a boat, called stroke, three, two and bow. Stroke sits at the stern and bow sits at bow, naturally! When you are racing, it will be bow that goes over the finish line first! Stroke sets the pace in the race, and the other 3 back stroke up. The cox will coach you as you row and steer the boat so all you need to concentrate on is your rowing.
As you sit in the boat (see diagram):
strokeside is on your right (red band on the rigger)- bowside is to your left (green band on the rigger)
- stern of the boat is in front of you
- bow of the boat is behind you
- oars are called blades
- riggers are the arms of the boat upon which your blades lean.
- always give way to motor boats. This will be for the cox to do, but its important you know! Motor boats should slow right down for you but they do have right of way!
- always inform your cox of other unpowered boats you see (i.e. Other rowers on the river) approaching you, so that he or she knows to steer appropriately. In addition, shout out very loudly saying 'ahead sculler/rower' and make sure that the other boat has heard you. Never assume they have, as thats how accidents happen!
- always listen to your cox!
How to Prepare for the Race Day!
Simple! During the training sessions just listen, learn and enjoy! Remember, this is all for fun and you also might find a sport you really like taking part in. Your cox will discuss how you will race, so by your last training session, you should be geared up to whiz pass your opponents. Here are a few pointers to help you out:
- Eat a meal the night before with carbohydrate (pasta, noodles, etc). Carbohydrate releases energy slowly so it should help you throughout the next day.
- Pack your bag the night before (spare clothes, sun cream, etc) - it will be an early start!
- Do not drink alcohol the night before.
- Bring your wallet with you. We have a full bar, Pimms stand, food and refreshment stalls.
- And finally, bring a large can of 'whopp ass' and a big smile for the local newspapers!
