Novice RacingIntroduction

The novice level is for athletes with the potential to win at novice level who are working towards race and winning standard. Most athletes will be competing in fours and eights.

The criteria for being in the novice squad are:-

  1. To have learnt the basics of rowing either through our Pubs and Clubs event, Learn to Row or a suitable introduction at another club. To have then spent time in the Foundation group improving technique.
  2. To have a reasonable level of strength and fitness evidenced by an 2K ergo bench mark of 7.30 for men and 8.30 for women.
  3. To be available for training regularly at weekends and 2 evenings a week.

Outings

Outings for the 2010/11 season commence at 7:30 at the weekends.

Training

The land training (essential to build strength and fitness for rowing) takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Tuesday is a rowing specific circuits class. A little different to what you might do at other gyms, it's important that you come along and learn to develop the correct muscle groups, core strength and flexibility necessary to row well.

Thursday evening is a short run and session on the rowing machine (ergo). You need coaching on the ergo to ensure that your technique is correct and that you're building up fitness appropriately so again, better to do this at the club house under coaches supervision than at a gym elsewhere.

Coaches

The EERC coaches are very much a coaching team and you willl benefit from access to more than one coach. Pete Clements will be leading the Novice group. Other coaches you will meet include John Sismey and Claire Toney.

Selection of crews

Joining the novice squad is not a guarantee of a crew seat. This is a competitive sport and the coaches will field the fastest crew available for each event. We try hard to ensure that everyone gets plenty of racing opportunities. You must expect that there will be some selection and whilst many factors are taken into consideration, the key selection criteria is who can move the boat fastest!

Joining

New enquirers interested in joining the Novice Squad should contact the Club Captain or the Membership Secretary.
